DON’T LET WATER RUN TO SAVE MONEY

Whenever you are not actually using the water, you should turn it off.  After all, you can always turn it right back on again.  Therefore, the next time that you are brushing your teeth, turn off the water instead of letting it run down the drain.  Of course, this is something that you should also do whenever you are washing your hands, rinsing off the dishes, cleaning vegetables or getting a cold drink as well.

While this may seem as though it wouldn’t actually save you any money, it will.  In fact, it will actually save you about 4 gallons of water per minute, between 12 to 18 gallons of water per day, which is around 200 gallons of water a week for a family of four.  This is because the average faucet flows at two gallons a minute and the average activity takes about 3 minutes.  Just imagine how much money you could be saving on your water bill by simply taking just this one simple step.

Now if you really must have some water there while you are doing these things, you could always save money here as well by simply filling up a pitcher, glass, or bucket from the water when you let water run, like whenever you are preheating your shower or dish water. This water can be used to water plants or rinse out a sink or tub when cleaning, saving you additional money by reducing your water use which will reduce your water utility bill.
