Settle Credit Card Debts With Your Better Half (by Kevin Craig)
Debt takes a severe toll on your conjugal life and in many cases it becomes one of the causes for marital break ups, but we should remember that with the exchange of vows at the church altar that we even promised to share the responsibilities and duties of one another. After marriage the scenario changes, but you will still be responsible for joint debt during the marriage. So recently if you fought over your spouse’s credit card bills that you failed to pay, now it’s the time to settle credit card debt to resolve the issue.
1. In case either of you have incurred insurmountable debts then make sure you repay your due amount on time before the interest starts accruing making the balance exorbitant to pay off. During a time of financial crisis you need to support each other. Try to discuss and plan out a budget to pay off the outstanding dues. You both need to combat the crisis in order to secure your financial future. Be patient and remember the vows you exchanged to be committed towards each other in both good and bad times. Keep focused on the financial issue at hand and don’t be distracted by other emotional issues.
2. If you have overwhelming debts then you both can negotiate with the credit card companies to reduce a considerable amount so that it becomes easier to pay off. While you are negotiating with the debt collectors do not argue with each other, rather appreciate your spouse’s point of view. If you differ on your spouse’s opinion then you must find common ground. If you coordinate well then you can convince your debt collector to reduce the debts.
3. Help your spouse to calculate income and expenses. Then plan a budget to pay off the owed amount. If you find your expenses exceeding your income then modify the budget plan accordingly. But you both need to compromise on your desires in order to get out of the maze of debt. If you organize a proper repayment plan then you can save money that can be deposited in your savings account.
These are the three basic ways to pay off your credit card debts. If one of the partners has great money management skills then ask him/her to handle the matter.
